THE METHOD

A tactic is only useful if you notice it.

Traditional tactics puzzles begin by giving away an important piece of information: there is a tactic in the position.

That makes them excellent for practicing calculation, combinations, and tactical patterns. But during a real game, nobody tells you when a tactical opportunity has appeared. You must recognize the moment yourself.

That is the problem Tactical Radar is designed to train.

Traditional puzzles ask: “Can you solve the tactic?”

Tactical Radar asks: “Would you have noticed it?”

The decision ordinary puzzles remove

Tactical skill has two parts:

Detection

Recognizing that a position contains a tactical opportunity.

Execution

Finding the correct move and calculating the continuation.

Most tactics trainers begin with execution. Because every position contains a tactic, searching for one is always the correct decision.

Real games are different. Sometimes a tactic exists, and sometimes the position only looks promising. You must decide whether deeper calculation is justified before you know the answer.

Why include positions with no tactic?

Mixing tactical and non-tactical positions creates four possible outcomes:

Without no-tactic positions, the bottom row disappears. A trainer can measure whether you found the solution, but it cannot tell whether your internal tactical alarm is properly calibrated.

Call tactics too freely, and you begin seeing combinations that do not work. Become too cautious, and real opportunities pass unnoticed.

No-tactic positions also provide useful contrast. A loose-looking piece may be tactically protected. A tempting sacrifice may fail to one defensive resource. A forcing move may be good without producing a genuine tactical win.

These positions are not filler. They help teach the difference between a pattern that looks familiar and a tactic that actually works.

Practice the decision you want to improve

Tactical Radar presents positions through the flow of real games. The motif is not named, and you are not told whether a tactic exists. You must decide when to stop, calculate, and commit.

This cannot reproduce every part of tournament chess. It does not recreate the pressure of the clock, the emotional investment in the result, or the consequences of making a mistake.

What it does preserve is one essential uncertainty:

Has the position become tactically critical, or should I keep playing?

Feedback then separates correct detections, missed tactics, false positives, and calculation errors. That distinction matters because a player who fails to notice opportunities has a different problem from one who notices the right moment but calculates it incorrectly.

The research behind the method

The design of Tactical Radar draws from several established areas of research:

  • Chess pattern recognition: Strong players are better at recognizing meaningful relationships in realistic chess positions, not simply memorizing where pieces appear.
  • Learning through contrast: Mixing related categories can help learners notice the differences that separate one category from another.
  • Signal detection: Detection ability must account for both missed signals and false alarms. Measuring only correct detections gives an incomplete picture.
  • Representative practice: Training is more likely to transfer when it preserves the information and decisions found in the real performance environment.

These studies did not test Tactical Radar itself, and this page is not claiming that they did. They support the principles behind the training method. The effectiveness of Tactical Radar should ultimately be judged through actual user outcomes, not assumed from citations.

Tactical Radar is not intended to replace ordinary tactics training.

Traditional puzzles help you learn patterns and calculate combinations efficiently. Tactical Radar trains the decision that comes before calculation.

One helps you solve the opportunity.

The other helps you notice it.
